Responsive ClassroomNicholas GascichFri, 23 Sep 2022 18:38:42 +0000/resources/responsive-classroom61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:632dfd1a888a9d21dfd1b2b3Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness.
The Responsive Classroom approach strengthens educators’ ability to:

• Design lessons that are active and interactive
• Use effective teacher language to promote academic and social growth
• Encourage engagement by giving students meaningful choices
• Start each day in a way that sets a positive tone for learning (morning meeting)
• Set high expectations and teach students how to meet them
• Establish routines that promote autonomy and independence
• Build a sense of community and shared purpose
• Teach students critical social skills such as problem-solving, communication, and collaboration

The secret to strong classroom management lies in predictable routines and procedures. From entering and exiting the classroom to managing materials to moments of transition, well-established routines and procedures can provide a natural flow of calmness and order to every part of the day. Giving students clear expectations for these routines and procedures helps them feel safe, independent, and empowered to participate in their classroom. Interactive Modeling is a specific practice Responsive Classroom educators use to establish classroom routines and procedures, especially in the first six weeks of school.

The use of logical consequences is one part of an approach to discipline used in the Responsive Classroom. It’s a powerful way of responding to children’s misbehavior that not only is effective in stopping the behavior but is respectful of children and helps them to take responsibility for their actions.

People often ask, “How are logical consequences any different from punishment?â€

The goal of punishment is to enforce compliance with the rules by using external controls or authoritarian discipline.
• While effective in stopping the misbehavior of the moment, punishment does little to increase student responsibility.
• Punishment often leads to feelings of anger, discouragement and resentment, and an increase in evasion and deception.

The goal of logical consequences is to help children develop internal understanding, self-control, and a desire to follow the rules.
• Logical consequences help children look more closely at their behaviors and consider the results of their choices.
• Unlike punishment, where the intention is to make a child feel shamed, the intention of logical consequences is to help children develop internal controls and to learn from their mistakes in a supportive atmosphere.

Service & LeadershipGuest UserWed, 20 Jul 2022 19:23:05 +0000/resources/service-amp-leadership61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:62d85268879fda23469b4598Leadership

Our students are given many opportunities to develop and display their leadership abilities in both formal and informal ways. Our Catholic teachings are the guide as we integrate character development, including respect, responsibility, and compassion, throughout the school day in all grade levels. Additionally, our students develop and nurture their leadership qualities in quiet moments of prayer and through the building of relationships with others. As a school, we seek to develop leaders who possess an internal moral compass allowing for courageous decision-making, who have the confidence, determination and resilience to face life challenges, and who promote the common good through individual and group actions.

At Saint Clement school and parish, we are aware that the world needs our graduates to be courageous young adults, empowered to lead in a complex, global society. Both inside and outside the classroom, students are challenged to go outside their comfort zones, explore new ideas, and succeed beyond their wildest dreams! In a nurturing environment they are allowed to explore their passions, learn from failure, persevere, and experience astounding success.

Leadership development occurs both organically and deliberately in classrooms and through various activities as students build relationships with others, work side-by-side on group projects, and learn effective communication strategies. The following is a sampling of additional leadership opportunities:

Student Council:

The student council is a representative organization that promotes school spirit, fosters community service, coordinates charity fundraising and social events, and conveys the interests of the student body to school administrators. Eighth grade students may serve as President and Vice President; seventh or eighth grade students may serve as Secretary and Treasurer. Third through eighth grade also elects a representative for each homeroom/advisory group; additional representatives from sixth through eighth grade are elected to serve the Pre-Kindergarten through second grade classes.

Scouts:

Starting in first grade, students can join the scouting program. Like so many programs at Saint Clement, the scouting program is also steeped in history and tradition. The various scout programs and groups helps students achieve their full potential by developing self-confidence, leadership, respect for others, and a commitment to service.

Altar Servers:

Saint Clement is blessed to have an active, committed group of altar servers.

Recycling Committee:

Our school is committed to being "green," as we work to be responsible stewards for our environment. Fourth grade students are given special tasks throughout the building to help promote this philosophy.

Jubilate Committee:

The Jubilate Choir offers students in grades 4 - 6 an opportunity to share their gift of music with our school and parish communities. The choir leads a number of liturgical celebrations throughout the year. The choir practices once a week during the school year on Wednesday afternoons and is directed by Mr. Gabe Mayhugh and Mr. Patrick Sinozich. The students have the opportunity to learn beautiful music and lead our school in sung worship at all school liturgies.

Service

We are all stewards of the many gifts and blessings God has given us. We are called to give thanks for those gifts, to use them wisely, and to return them with gratitude to God.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø and Parish offers many opportunities for students to practice the stewardship of time and talent. This service is at the heart of what we teach our students at Saint Clement. Our parish spirituality of Pray - Serve - Give is embodied by all of our staff and faculty. From integrating our faith into all we do, to using our strengths to help others, to modeling the importance of prayer, our students continue to amaze us in their passion for service and we see the sense of fulfillment they experience when allowed the opportunity to give back.

Many students serve weekly in various grade level leadership roles within the school and parish. For instance, our 4th graders lead our recycling and green initiatives. Our 8th graders have the opportunity to serve as Eucharistic Ministers at church. Many of our students also serve as Altar Servers, Lectors, and Greeters at Saint Clement Church.

Service examples from the past year include:

  • Made sack lunches and served the homeless through the Lincoln Park Communtiy Shelter

  • Supported the Madonna House

  • Volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House

  • Donated and put together hygiene kits to benefit Chicago's vulnerable youth and young adults

  • Volunteered at Misericordia - A community of care for persons with developmental disabilities

  • Donated and put together buckets of household cleaning supply packages for people living in poverty and formerly homeless/newly arrived families to help settle into their new homes

  • Raised over $10,000 for the Heifer International Project. Each grade level reached their livestock goal!

  • Coordinated clothing/food drives for the Lincoln Park Community Shelter

  • Participated in Saint Clement Service Day

  • Provided, wrapped, and delivered Christmas presents for every student at a local Chicago public school

  • Supported our El Salvador Sister Parish, Iglesia 22 de Abril, located in an impovershed area on the outskirts of San Salvador

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø offers our students experiences in cultural arts as a part of the daily curriculum, as well as through extra-curricular activities. Our students have the opportunity to participate in music, performance arts, visual arts, and our newest instrumental band program. Additionally, because we are located in such close proximity to amazing cultural arts opportunites, our faculty and students are continually taking advantage of the many offerings of the fine city of Chicago. We are located within walking distance of many opportunities, including the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Conservatory. We see the city of Chicago as our cultural arts classroom!

In addition, within our school day, students have opportunities to express their interests and creativity via the following forums:

Instrumental Music

The instrumental band program is open to students in grades 4 - 8 who are interested in learning to play the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, or snare drum. The band practices before school every Tuesday, with lessons conducted during the school day. Each class is designed for students to learn the fundamentals of playing an instrument and to develop the skills necessary to play in a concert band, a small ensemble, and as a soloist. Students will use warm-ups, scales, solos, a method book, and band music to develop their tone, technique, articulation, and musicianship on their instrument. Students will also learn how to read music, basic music theory, and will do ear training. Culminating formal performances in the fall and spring for our school, parent, and parish community allow the students to perform for their family and friends.

Choral Arts

The Anchords (grades 7-8) is a pop group that performs at Christmas and spring concerts. Clementines (grades 4-5) performs a Christmas and spring mini musical for the student body. These groups give students who love music extra chances to perform! Students also have the chance to perform liturgical celebrations throughout the year and during our Sunday liturgies.

Concerts

All Saint Clement students perform in an annual Christmas concert and a formal Spring concert. The performances are held in conjunction with our Visual Arts Gallery and Show. All students in Pre-K through 8 receive music instruction at Saint Clement during the school day. Depending on the student's age level, they will learn the basics of singing, including correct breathing techniques, posture, sight reading music, and performance practices. Once in middle school, students continue to perfect proper singing, breathing, sight reading music, and performance techniques. These skills will be honed while performing a varied repertoire of music from many different eras, cultures, and styles. Students will also learn basic music theory and composition using our Garage Band software. Our formal concerts throughout the year allow us to come together as a community and honor all of their hard work, dedication, and learning.

STEAM & TechnologyGuest UserWed, 20 Jul 2022 17:02:13 +0000/resources/steam-amp-technology61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:62d833571feabe7dc5f091f3At Saint Clement, we're continually amazed by our students' growing independence, creativity, and productivity as they integrate technology into their assignments. Our students have access to a wide array of technological tools and applications, seamlessly integrated into our curriculum and teaching practices. In STEAM classes, students work with tools like Ozobots, Dash Robots, and iPads to learn coding concepts such as sequencing, events, loops, algorithms, operations, and variables. In Digital Media Literacy, students work with iPads to increase proficiency with computer skills, such as typing, and to critically analyze digital media tools and content.

Primary School Technology

In the Primary School, we inspire students with a lasting love of learning, including a deep appreciation for technology. Starting in Kindergarten, each student is introduced to their first Chromebook, which they use to engage in technology-related projects and activities. Technology is embedded in the core curriculum, reinforcing classroom learning. All students in grades K-5 are provided with individual Chromebooks. Every year, students and parents sign our Acceptable Use Policy, which covers personal privacy, internet safety, and responsible technology behavior.

Technology instruction is guided by the ISTE National Education Technology Standards (NETS) and is integrated with classroom learning. Key activities include:

  • Language development through reports, writing, and desktop publishing.

  • Math-related activities involving quantification, labeling, and measurement.

  • Data collection, recording, interpretation, and representation.

  • Online research and comparison with other information sources.

  • Multimedia creativity involving pictures, sound, clip art, text, and visual transitions.

Kindergarten - Grade 5

  • Every classroom is equipped with a Newline interactive screen with built-in whiteboard and web search functionalities.

  • Each classroom has an Apple TV used for audio/visual presentations and streaming educational content.

  • Document cameras in every room for instruction.

  • Grades K-3: Each classroom has a cart for housing and charging Chromebooks.

  • Grades 4-5: Students are issued Chromebooks and chargers, which they take home to complete homework.

Middle School Technology

In Middle School, students in grades 6-8 are provided with one-to-one Chromebooks, used primarily in the classroom. As students transition from childhood to young adulthood, we emphasize the development of healthy technology habits. The Acceptable Use Policy, signed annually by students and parents, addresses technology wellness, internet safety, and responsible behavior.

Technology skills are integrated into the classroom environment, aligned with ISTE National Education Technology Standards and 21st Century Skills. Skills are taught contextually, with students learning as they apply them in various academic areas. Additional resources include digital photography and editing, video recording and editing, content-specific technologies, Newline interactive screens, Apple TVs, document cameras, digital audio recording and editing, and online tools.

Examples of context-based technology skills:

  • Audio recording in world language classes to demonstrate language mastery.

  • Word processing in language arts as a primary tool for writing.

  • Online research and database use in social studies and science for research.

  • Spreadsheet manipulation in science and math for data illustration and communication.

Skills such as collaboration, communication, and creative expression are woven throughout all content areas, ensuring a comprehensive technology education.

The Saint Clement Middle School Program (6-8) is designed to meet the educational, emotional, and spiritual needs of adolescents who are often experiencing rapid physical, intellectual, and social growth. The Middle School faculty take advantage of the natural curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Our rigorous curriculum focuses on the core subjects, a disciplined manner of inquiry, individual creativity, and developing competent study habits. The faculty and administrators have developed experiences for our students that help to provide a secure base from which all of our students can grow, especially at this crucial developmental stage on their educational journey.

Our private Middle School is designed to meet the needs of early adolescents as they experience the emergence of their own independence. Our purpose is to help each student develop their skills, an enthusiasm for learning, and the confidence and discipline to think independently and behave responsibly. Within a strong liberal arts curriculum aligned to the Common Core Standards, students are challenged, within their ability, to embrace new concepts and ideas, listen to others, and think critically, as they journey toward becoming more independent.

Our Middle School students have many exciting opportunities in addition to daily coursework in the core subjects -- science, mathematics, language arts, social studies, Spanish, literature and religion. Students also have weekly classes in STEAM, Physical Education, Music, and Visual Arts.

The Saint Clement Middle School Advisory Program ensures that each student has a formally appointed member of the faculty who will serve as their personal and academic advocate and be able to provide support to the student throughout their middle school years. Advisors and their advisees meet five times a week. The Advisories are groups comprised of a group of students and a faculty member. Advisories meet each morning and afternoon, providing opportunities for students to interact, plan, and problem-solve under the guidance and support of an adult. Advisors are the primary contact for families; they know the students best. Advisors oversee the whole child at school, as they serve as advocates for the student, facilitate student-teacher meetings as needed, explore how individual students learn best and help students set goals for each trimester.

Our Elementary School ( Grades 1-5) curriculum addresses the needs of the whole child - their intellectual, social/emotional, creative, physical, and spiritual development. Teachers combine their knowledge with students' interests to promote an academically rich and creative environment. Because young minds are highly inquisitive, our private Elementary School emphasizes the basics - language arts, literature, religion, social studies, science and mathematics. Weekly classes in Spanish, music, art, physical education, and technology complete our program.

Opportunities are continually available for individual and collaborative learning as each child's skills are developed. From first grade on, weekly, hands-on experiences in not only the core content areas, but also in the fine arts allow our students to become well rounded as we continue to build a positive foundation for their learning and curiosity to grow.

We have high expectations for our students, and they constantly surprise us with their attitudes and achievements at an early age. Regular homework assignments in the Elementary School help establish organizational skills and discipline they will need to be successful in the future. Social skills and conflict resolution based on the Responsive Classroom philosophy are modeled daily.

We are always mindful that a child's early years are critical in forming attitudes toward God, themselves, others, and learning. The fact that each grade is self-contained enables these attitudes to develop in safe and positive ways. Faculty members come to know each child's strengths and weaknesses very well, and continually create opportunities for support, guidance, and tools for growth.
